Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Coach

2 academic years, 120 ECTS, Diploma

  • Accredited Programme by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CY.Q.A.A.)
  • Government Grant up to €3.420 for each year of study (with income criteria)

PRACTICAL TRAINING

The College collaborates with licensed and fully equipped gym stations “Oxygen Gym” and “The Train Station Gym” in Nicosia.

“Oxygen Gym” gym is a multi-purpose training facility that extends over 3 floors, with modern equipment and fully air-conditioned rooms. The staff consists of trainers and coaches with appropriate qualifications and extensive experience. The gym has facilities for weightlifting, resistance training, and different types of cardiorespiratory machines, and provides specialised and high-level services such as personal training, training with special functional training equipment, kick boxing classes, etc. The students, as part of their studies, will have the opportunity to use the Gym facilities for the purposes of their courses. They will also have a free access to the gym.

The “Train Station Gym” gym has entered into an agreement with the College, under which the College may use its premises, facilities and equipment for the needs of Programme of Study under evaluation. The gym has a well-equipped facility for weightlifting and cross training.

Upon the completion of the Programme of Study, graduates are expected to:

Knowledge

  1. Explain the basic principles and laws of exercise, as well as safe training systems and methods, with the goal of effectively designing personalised training programmes.
  2. Recognise the appropriate fitness assessment measures, as well as measures of functional motor ability.
  3. Name the various training methods (cyclic, interval, conditioning, etc.) depending on the goal and type of group training programme.
  4. Define methods of teaching group training programmes in order to properly and effectively guide the trainees.
  5. Recognise special populations and explain the common injuries that exercisers might face, aiming to ensure safety, prevention, and well-being of the exercisers.

Skills

  1. Design and provide personalised training programmes based on the specifics of each trainee (goals, medical history, exercise history, age, fitness level, etc.)
  2. Apply appropriate fitness assessment measures, as well as measures of functional motor ability.
  3. Apply various training methods (cyclic, interval, conditioning, etc.) depending on the goal and type of group training programme
  4. Be able to design and implement different types of group training programmes
  5. Possess the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to be able to design and implement personal and group training programmes, as well as to be able to respond to the demands of the market.

Competences

  1. Be able to correctly perform resistance training exercises and guide the trainees accordingly
  2. Contribute to raising the awareness of citizens / trainees of how continuous physical exercise can benefit the quality of their life.
  3. Guidecorrect and adjust a training programme with the aim of reducing the risk of injury

Short CV: Mr Charalambos Assos is a Lecturer at KES College since 2018. He is a holder of an undergraduate university Degree in Physical Education from the University of Semmelweis while he is also in the process of obtaining a postgraduate qualification in Special Inclusive Education from the European University ofCyprus. Mr Assos has a SHO 1st Dan in Karate. Since 2014, he works as a fitness coach and personaltrainer at a gym. In 2017, he represented the National Team of Cyprus at the Bodybuilding contest abroad.

Short CV: Ms Kristi Louca is a Lecturer at KES College since 2019. She is a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Sports from the Democritus University of Thrace and a holder of a postgraduate qualification with title Applied Body Activity and Sports from the Vasil Levski Academy in Sophia. Between 2005 and 2016, Mrs Louca worked as a gym instructor. She is a certified trainer in the following fields:

* Yoga works with 200 hours of training (level B)

* Pilates (specializing in Pilates and Mat machines)

* Total Barre Instructor by Stott Pilates

* TRX suspension training.5

She is an international presenter of various Fitness events and fitness programmers in morning programs over the past 4 years, representing and promoting health and sport. Since 2017 she is the owner of theKarma Pilates & Yoga Studio. She has participated to numerous seminars and conferences that related to her field of expertise.

Short CV: Mr. Marios Koutzis is a Lecturer at KES College. He holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Leicester (2007) and a Bachelor Degree in Health Science from Lock Haven University (1998). From 1990 – 2004 he was a basketball athlete and was a player of the teams ENAD, APOEL, National Basketball Team of Cyprus Mrs. From 2002 – 2007 he worked as a Gymnast and since 2007 he is the owner of Oxygen Gym. He teaches subjects of his specialty.

Short cv: Mr. Andreas Constantinou has been a Lecturer at KES College since 2019 specialized in Physical activity for people with special needs. He graduated from the T.E.F.A.A  Trikala, University of Thessaly (Department of Athletics and Physical Education). During his degree, he completed his internship at the Wheelchair Basketball club “Asteras Trikalwn”, at the 1st Primary school of Trikala, at the Psychiatric Clinic “Ayia Anastasia” and several more. In 2013, he completed a Masters of Arts in special needs at the University of Nottingham and worked as a volunteer at the Bluecoat Academy Secondary School. His interest in sports began at the age of 9. He started with swimming, and then, 3 years later went on to continue as a 400m hurdle athlete for 10 years. His participation in body building and fitness resulted in him gaining the 2nd and 3rd position in his category (Men’s Physique up to 1.74cm) in 2014 and 2015 respectively. His involvement in Crossfit, became the catalyst for his interest in weightlifting, in which he has been involved for the past 4 years. He is currently part of the Cyprus National Team and has been able to reach 1st place in the general classification. Since 2013 he was working as a gymnastics trainer and as of 2018 he owns The Train Station Gym. He teaches subjects of his specialty.

Short CV: Mr. Christos Constantinou is a Lecturer at KES College since 2018. He graduated from the University of Nottingham with a Bachelor’s Degree (BSc) in Nutrition (2015). He is currently in the process of completing his Master’s Degree in “Exercise and Performance” of the International Sports Nutrition Organisation and Middlesex University. Mr. Konstantinou has several awards in the field of sports, some of which are:

-Cyprus champion in the sport of physique in the Junior category 2013

-2nd place in the Mediterranean games in the sport of physique in the Junior category 2013

-Champion 2017 in the sport of Dynamic Triathlon in the “Bench Lift” category

-Champion 2017 in the sport of Dynamic Triathlon in the “Deep Sitting” category

-3rd place in STRONGMAN 2018 where he is among the strongest athletes on the island.

Mr. Konstantinou received a cultural award in 2010 by his Municipality “for his achievements in letters, arts and culture”.

Mr. Constantinou is the president of the Cypriot Dynamic Triathlon Federation, a recognised Federation by THE Cyprus Sports Organisation. He is a Member of the Cyprus Nutrition Association and is the Managing Director of ADVANCED NUTRITION SCIENCE. He is one of the founding members of the ATHLETES INNOVATION GROUP, a group of scientists whose main goal is the development and evolution of sports and collaborates both with professional athletes and trainees who want to test their limits.

Short CV: Ms Froso Costa-Ioannou is a Senior Lecturer at KES College and the Programme Coordinator of the programme of study ‘Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Coach’ since 2018. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sports from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1999) and a postgraduate degree in Exercise and Health from the same University (2003). Since 2010, Mrs Costa-Ioannou is an international presenter in Group Fitness and works as a Head Trainer at the Les Miles. Moreover she is certified by Grafts HELLAS in the field of aerobics and Personal Training. Mrs. Ioannou is a certified trainer from Stott Pilates in the field of Reformer jumpboard interval training and Athletic Conditioning. Between 2006-2009 she taught Physical Education at a Private Institution in Secondary Education and since 2015 she is teaching subjects in relation to her qualifications in the Higher Education sector. She has participated in numerous seminars and conferences in relation to her subject area.

Short CV: Mr Antonis Polyviou is a Lecturer at KES College since 2018. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education under the department of Sports Medicine and Biology of Exercise from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens since 2003 and a Master’s degree since 2005 in Sports and Exercise Science from the Trinity University. He teaches courses of his specialty.
